Hello everybody,

you may remember that we have recently been joined by a new Streaming and Social Media Specialist.

While he knows his way around Twitch and Twitter, he is unfortunately less experienced with FIDS and Fleets. Attempts to enroll him at the Academy have failed, so it's time we take matters into our own hands and help him get familiar with our game, so he can fully share your experience of the Endless universe.

Starting tomorrow, we will be live on Twitch every Wednesday at 4PM CEST to show him the ropes. Wether you are a new player looking for tips, or a veteran with sage advice to share, come join us in chat. To be sure you don't miss it, set your reminder on Twitch.

Which faction would you recommend for a beginner?

Hmm, which faction does not have anything faction specific, oh well, none.
Let's do UE.

Since the tech tree can be a bit daunting to new players, playing Sophons and focusing on the tech tree would be a good idea.

For new players I always recommend UE, Sophons and as 3rd option Lumeris. First two can be played on lower difficulties completely ignoring anything about affinity and specific traits. The Lumeris can be played this way too, but has the difference that you have to buy your outposts.

Including DLC I will dare to put Vaulters in this category.

As second choices: Horatio and Cravers.

Rest of factions has affinity and/or traits that cannot be ignored when playing them, specially Vodiany, Unfallen and Umbral Choir.

Funny thing is, I actually tried to make a tier list based on "uniqueness" of the factions recently.

This was the result:

(Note, that this is not about how "difficult" a faction is to play, but only how many special aspects they bring to the game. And of course it is totally based on personal opinion ;) )

T1: Basic factions (Their traits only focus on a certain part of FIDSI and don't change any game mechanic)

  • UE (focus Influence)
  • Sophons (focus Science)
  • Lumeris (focus Dust)

T2: Have some mechanics that can be ignored but require attention to get the most out of them.

  • Horatio (Pop-management for splicing)
  • Cravers (Depletion)
  • Nakalim (Relics)
  • Hissho (Keii, Rituals) [not sure here, haven't played them much]

T3: Have a unique mechanic that can't be ignored, but doesn't break the basic game rules

  • Vaulters (Argosy)
  • Unfallen (Vines)

T4: Have a unique mechanic that can't be ignored and use slightly different game rules

  • Riftborn (Pop-Building + Inverted planet affinity)

T5: Use completely unique game mechanics

  • Vodyani (Shipbound)
  • Umbral Choir

For new players most of the T1+T2 factions should be ok, as long as they are aware of how the faction differs from the rest (i.e. no colonizer ships for Lumeris)

I think Sophons would be the easiest ones to learn the game without any prior knowledge, because they only change the speed of research. Second UE or Horatio.

Sophons are easiest, imo

For new players i recommend the UE and the Sophons so they can learn with them the basics they need for others like the Riftborn or Vodyani.

lol, are you joking?

Yeah, it can be ignored. If you want to lose.

I've created a very simple, but quite all encompassing table

Name

Basic

Defends using basic resource by (quirk)

Attacks to aquire basic (modified) resource

Food

Horatio

-

Cravers(Depletion Points)

Industry

Riftborn

-

Hissho(Keii)

Dust

Lumeris

-

Vodyani(Essence)

Science

Sophons

Vaulters (portals)

Nakalim (Relics)

Influence

UE

Unfallen (vines)

Umbral Choir(Sleepers)

As one can see there's a place for at least 3 unique factions filling the niches left.

I would argue either Sophons or Unfallen, as both tend to crush it in the end game. However, the UE is probably the most user friendly of all the current facts, as they allow for a balance between millitary, influence, and industry. Plus, while the Sophons have the quirky humour, the UE has a good narrative plot as well.

The UE is the best faction for a new player, I think. They don't have any major modifications to the basic game mechanics, and their quest lets you specialize them into the kind of gameplay you like best. A new player isn't going to be completely sure about what kind of faction they want to play or how aggressive they want to be, and the UE lets you decide that after you start playing.

Well anyone who is able and willing to watch, duh.
Also that is "Central European" 4PM so large amount of Eastern-European (GMT/UTC+2-)folks are already at home alongside Russians and Middle-East-folks.

There is indeed good reason(s) why "United Empire (UE)" is the (default) chosen faction for the Tutorial.
And although they are (seemingly) most powerful at "influence"-style of gameplay, they're generally really good all-a-rounders / everything-goes-lot, especially if you're able to forge some alliances and you're able to unlock first "real"-battleships early enough to fend-off the pirates/barbarians.

I would go for one of two - the sophons or vaulters, here are my reasons:

1. both factions have a good story, and the sophons story has funny writing.

2. both are science heavy - going for science victory is easier for new players and its one of the best options when playing very big galaxies - you can turtle up and do some diplomacy.

3. Better science leads to better fleets, if you can out-tech other fleets then you'll be safe (most of the time).

4. Portals - such a game changer - you can defend largr areas with just a *few* fleets that you retrofit as needed - saving a few dust and strategic resources.

5. The Aragosy! Instant colony + golden age, give that ship some engiens and it zipps through the galaxy + it acts as a portable portal - making for some very nice suprise attacks (porting fleets behind enemy lines)
