According to description, different Unfallen units are just evolving stages of the same entity, so: civilian -> soldier -> fighter -> medium ship -> large ship -> battle station (not present).

Both civilian and soldier are very knotted pieces of living tree, shaped similarly to crystal. Their faces are glowing tears, color may vary. They fly above the ground in strong energy field generated by body. Their hands are separated from body, are artificial and controlled by that field too. Between branches are barely visible organs that create intoxicating smoke (if needed).

Civilians beautify themselves with ribbons (like WH40K Honor Badges, but because of field they hang upside down) to show their age, wealth and origin. Soldiers are more effuse and carve themselves with tracery to imprint their deeds.

Ships hulls are visually similar to jellyfish: thick head and quite soft tentacles/branches (large ships have few thick zones but it’s often for distraction of enemy only). Hulls loose structure successfully impedes enemy aiming, and wood is very vulnerable but damaged brunches are quickly replaced by new ones.

Ships defense modules are hidden in branches. Guns are separated from hull and controlled by energy fields.

Little more info. Key points of Faction descriptions from Phase 1 are in bold.

1. The Unfallen ships are cyborgs: blend of wood and metal. Obviously, creepers are borrowed from Unfallen natural body: they are very vulnerable because it's just wood -- but permanently move to add serious difficulties for those who want to shot specific parts of hull. New creepers quickly replace damaged ones (regeneration) to hide defensive modules in heart of ship.

2. Offensive modules fly nearby a hull in energy field generated by the Unfallen body. The same field but in much smaller scale is used by civilians and soldiers to manipulate their artificial arms; it also can't be used to stop bullets and so on, because The Unfallen are not born to fight. They have numerous arms from light metal that can't be a serious weapon (The Unfallens are true pacifists); still, The Unfallen can make few things at a time.

3. The Unfallen life is very long. Because of that reference to very old tree is used: such trees often exist without leaves and initial flexibility and could have very few similarities with own saplings. With age (and so further through evolution line from civilians to battleships) tree bodies become more and more knotted.

4. The Unfallen are trees, so they have evolved without need of face and mimic. Their language consists in changes of color glow in trunk tears. For the convenience of others Factions the Unfallen create limited areas of glow though could emit it by whole body. Their main strength is possibility to launch psychotropic spores is common for each specie because could be required anytime.

I really like how your design mentions that all of the Unfallen grow up in sizes and are eventually ships themselves later.  Your crystal like ship design is also very unique to me for a 'plant' sort of race and the extra arms compliment that.  If I didn't know anything about the Unfallen and just saw your images I would almost think your visual design is that of the Harmony!

I think, there is more similarity with Silics than Harmony if we compare torso silhouettes. It's important to have distinctive silhouettes for each in-game character, and if described misunderstanding exists, then I clearly didn't pay enough attention to it

Still I believe, whoever wins, Ampliteam anyway will have hard work to finalize proposed look using all its knowledge.

Their bodies remind me of cones or seedpods and there is that unifying appearance of the way a crystal grows, a repeating pattern that spirals and grows outwards.

With the separated arms and floating ribbons, I get a kind of spirit vibe, especially with the face hole glow. Which coupled with the way you have drawn them, gives off an enlightened kind of vibe.

Its good to see a use of cross hatching as well.

A tiny bit rough but nevertheless its very good work Celeir.

As we found, rough image of tree is way too similar to tight materials like crystals. Ok, then! Here is more detailed look:

If only I could spend more time during the previous stage of contest, I'd make all images more detailed like this, but it wasn't meant to be

Few thoughts:

  1. Why Energy Field? Before The Unfallen, their home world was inhabited by robots. Robots wiped themselves in huge war, and all what remained from them were clouds of small semi-automated bots that were trying to complete the only thing they knew: their program -- and it was a problem for planet flora. To protect themselves, flora was forced to evolve in new way, and instead of spikes and poison it has created energy fields. The Unfallen are the part of that world and so have the same ability, but also have managed to use it in more complex ways. That is how the Unfallen learned to move. And use instruments or artificial arms. By the way, these robots could leave artifacts that allowed the Unfallen to find how to build ships-cyborgs.
  2. Why not fighters? Energy field not so powerful to stop bullets or allow to fly in the sky, so arms should be light. Also, similarly to fire axes, chain saws and many other things we know, arms only look dangerous but aren't as effective as real weapon.
  3. Where are their organs that generates psychotropic spores? It has been natural to hide from predators from where exactly counter attack could come, so these organs are not in sight. Habit to hide them has been (logically) strong all the time, and today it's very obscenely to ask the Unfallen where these organs are. Maybe you should be more than friend with them to know it
  4. Why asymmetric? The Unfallen are trees, and trees are asymmetric. They 'attach' their arms in random places, where it's more useful or is allowed by form of trunk. I believe, arms should be asymmetric and without smooth lines too.
  5. What these sparkles are? It's the way to speak. To speak, the Unfallen change brightness and color of each sparkle at the same time, but to make dialog more comfortable to other races, they create more dense field of sparkles where face should be. In rage, face can 'disperse' because its creation is consciously controlled.

That looks really cool. Admittedly, I wasn't all that impressed by your entry when I first saw it, but now I know why you are beating me in votes. You know what? You earned my  vote. I'd love to see this get made.

Glad to hear it! Though Frogsquadron said it's contest of concepts and artistic skill is on second place, pictures always draw attention better than texts. Especially with my English

It’s great that their bodies are pointy branches, that they float off the ground… They remind me of wind chimes, kindling, and EL’s Wind Guardian. The spell tags, orbiting prosthetic limbs, and how the wood twists and drapes like a robe give them a very dignified, aloof, and supernatural impression—really interesting for a diplomatic faction. I wouldn’t expect the Unfallen to appear so artificial, dry, and erudite, but I like this interpretation very much.
