THE BLESSING

I have always been a dreamer. From the moment I sprouted, I have looked up to the stars. I lived my life in the great Green – the all-encompassing sharing that was the Mother’s gift to her children – but I have always longed for the great Black that floats above us, just out of reach.

I spent many seasons gazing at the night sky, awestruck by the splendour of the stars, glowing with a primitive fire more wondrous than any other light. I searched the skies alone, but never Lonely. Through the Mother’s Green, the Unfallen were always with me.

Then, one night, as I gazed at the glory of the cosmos, sinking into the Green, I noticed something. A star was growing larger, soon surpassing the light of any star in the sky. It was falling towards us. When I realised what it was, I felt a pure, primitive joy race through my xylem.

I could feel its light on my bark, its heat on my leaves. It grew until it swamped the sky. Then finally, it arrived.

I burned that night. The star fire consumed me, burning away what I once was, filling the air with the soft glow of star-Dust. That night, the Mother’s heart was broken. That star shattered the Mother, spilled her molten blood and filled the air with her tears. But in the midst of her death-throes, the Mother had a few gifts left for her child.

The first gift was one last glimpse of the Green. Unfallen screaming in agony as they burned in the Mother’s blood or choked on the thick ash that blotted out all light, their pain filling the Green with a sharp, deafening keening. I saw the Green burn. I begged for it to stop, to stop feeling the pain wrought by the stars.

Then, the Mother’s second gift. The pain stopped. The voices which had comforted me for countless seasons were silenced. The Green was obliterated. I was separate and Alone. Take me away from the fire, I wept. Save me, I beseeched the Mother.

In her third gift, she answered my prayers. My wood had burnt to charcoal, a fragile skeleton of ash, but in the flames of oblivion she forged me a new body from her molten blood. A sleek, smooth mixture of ash and stone, living off of the Mother’s magic, star-Dust my new sap. With her undeserved blessing, I cowardly shot away from her last breaths, abandoning my home and my people.

Her fourth gift was only revealed once I finally stopped fleeing my guilt and my grief. When I found a new home, the Mother’s final gift was bestowed upon me. You. I fled the Mother, but she hid within me the seeds of a new future. A new Green. We will find the Mother again. We will heal her wounds. Until then, you must grow, my Saplings. And always remember: I, Rock-of-the-World, will not abandon my people again.

Love the use of the Mother (mother planet of the Unfallen) as a motive to their mission.

Really like your writing style

Wish you good luck!
