"Run... The End is coming !"

A single thought, piercing all of our consciousness. We have been prepared for this war, for this day, but not for this event, not for our downfall !

A dozen of our elders are now choked by despair as we are helplessly looking at the sky, at our dear star Jnikal, now hidden from our sight by thousands of ship-sized monsters plunging onto us. They are here...

We are the true heirs, the strong and the dominant ! We are unbeatable, we are untamable, WE are the Unfallen ! How can this be ! How can this...

.

.

.

Calm down... young one...

We shall be your kindred souls, your masters and apprentices : we are one in this body now... You shall never be alone...

This war you witnessed was the most brutal we, Unfallen, have fought since our creation... This war was about you, about your future... And now your future has been decided...

These last decades, to make you hate us, you have been indoctrinated and begun to persuade yourself that those not thinking like you didn't have value as individuals, that they had to be killed... But now, you are one with us... As we were looking at your burnt corpse, we decided to incorporate you into us, to make you live through us and us through you...

We sense your confusion, your fear... We know what your leaders thought : that the value of our specie had to be decided by its strength, by our military prowess, that the End could be avoided by becoming always more powerful, and that those who disagreed with them were traitors...

When they attacked us, the traitors, we lost thousands of comrades, faced the End, but we discovered that we didn't have to fear it, because we are so much more than growing bodies acting as tombs for our souls... Each of us can be the receptacle of an infinite wisdom and knowledge as long as we are ready to accept other consciousness into us... to see what lies beyond our personal interests...

Then, we began striking back, with each defeat increasing our knowledge, each victory our resolution, each battle our dedication to peace... And now we are at peace with ourselves... Even if our planet is ravaged, our people starved, we have never been so close to prosperity and to survival, young one... Simply because we now know what our future, your future, will be... And it will not be war...

.

.

.

I understand... We understand... We are legion, and one, and separated and united in minds, and united as a body, and united as a community... We do not fear the unknown, we do not fear the End... We can't be forgotten, we can't be alone, we can be killed, but we can't die, because we live in the others... We are the Unfallen, and we are Ynilm, 423th soul of Jnikal Naru, winner of the Last War...

525 words -> 519 words -> 500 words

Please give as much feedback as you want, and thank you for reading !

Good luck to all participants !

Edit 1 (16/10) : Following the advice of carolean7 (thank you for your feedback), I have tried to make things more clear while diminishing the number of words : for that, I reduced the repetitions, shortened the names, while trying to keep the same meaning to the sentences.

Cool story Hinin! I like the inner monologue (dialogue?) you present here. Very unique!

My biggest general piece of advice to make things more clear. As a reader, it isn't obvious to me who is speaking in the middle section. Also, you open with a scene of a war, and then reference a war in the middle section, are they the same war? And is that war continuing or over? And what is this war is being fought over. Why are the enemies called "traitors"? You don't need to necessarily be specific, but at least hint at these things. Basically, you need to tell the reader more, but with less, being that you are already over 500 words. So good luck!

Lastly, in the middle there is a small section where you switch from italics to normal font, I'm guessing that is not intended?

You got a good foundation here. Can't wait to see more! Keep it up!

The idea of this text appeared when I read the description Digitalhawk made his/her description of the design s/he submitted : the fact that the Unfallen can absorb things to grow stronger (a more direct approach to what all living beings can do) made me think about the consequences of this biological trait on their society. When a living being is absorbed by another after its death, is this one a new receptacle for the soul of the deceased (and does the cycle of life is doubled by a cycle of the souls) ?

At the end, this text is about the last time the Unfallen fought each other, the way they become peacekeepers, and why they call themselves the Unfallen (is it because they possess an incredible endurance due to their tree condition, or is it because they can live through others ?).

^This clarification was much needed as it made me understand a story that I was initially confused by.

I now like it quite a lot, especially the idea of a civil war where Unfallen fought other Unfallen. The idea of living through others is quite unique and I find it very interesting. Yyou have obviously put a lot of thought into your submission, I just wish it was a bit more clear

Yes I know all of that is quite difficult to understand at first sight, but I wanted to immerge myself in a thinking process a little different from what we are used to (and this, combined with the 500 words limitation, can make it quite nebulous, but my name can be read as "foggy" or "nebulous" in French, so I think it describes my work quite well)...

I would have liked to meet the Amplicrew though...
