I use them to help me predict the rewards.  It can be helpful if your probes are limited and you need to prioritize.

2.  Expedition Power 2 never awards Luxury or Strategic Resources.

There are five results for curiosity exploration; Anomoly, strategic resource, luxury resource, loot(pirate ships count as loot), and nothing.  Since no strategic or luxury resources drop for Expedition Power 2 and what's below, the reward will likely be Loot.

3.  All Anomalies are in Expedition Power 1.

The tooltip can give a clue to the reward.  For example an Atmospheric Expedition Power 2 will claim an Anomaly is the highest chance, but all anomolies are Power 1 so Loot will be the likely reward.
