Should we do a lore pass on the tech tree?

Our first vote of 2018 asks an important question: should we do a lore pass on the tech tree? 


Let's add some context: the tech tree went through numerous modifications and changes over the last year and some, and since the Early Access, because of gameplay needs we have added, tweaked, changed, moved things around... the current tech tree has a fair amount of techs that are completely disconnected from their unlocks. Here's an example:


One of these things is not like the others...


Applied Casimir Effect was a technology players in the first Endless Space loved to rush, as it allowed players to get out of their starting constellation to start exploring the rest of the galaxy. Due to our numerous changes, though, it now unlocks food improvements and specializations. If you're an experienced player, there's a good chance you don't read these things anymore. If you're a new player, though, that's bound to be confusing, and a little less immersing than what you're used to if you like to follow the universe in our games.


This is why we're asking you, our players, new and experienced: should we harmonize it? This might entail moving things around like certain unlocks, icons, or just swapping titles and descriptions in other instances. In any case, it might be a little different at first, and you could need some time to adjust, but we think the tech tree would definitely be better moving forward.

I'm going to give this a grok. Changes to tech trees are divisive. I loved your change to the military techs. But more changes might be overwhelming and distracting.

This is certainly worth doing, although it will be a shame to see some of the descriptions go as the 'voice' of all of them per faction are so nice. What I would like to see from this PoV is more unique flavour text for laws, techs and improvements.

Can we get a third option to wait? I want a lore pass, I really do, but I think the techs themselves still need reorganizing and tweaking, which will likely make for another lore pass after that.

We absolutely should do this. I think it will be good not only in terms of immersion (for new players) but also for sort of refreshening experience from the game (for experienced players) as u gonna sort of rediscover all these descriptions once they harmonized.

OF COURSE you should. No, you shouldnt, you HAVE TO. Thats why i'm playing this game. Dont even think about redusing lore size in game!!!!

Absolutely fix the descriptions; for a lore-nut like me, it's really bothersome to see the descriptions for tech not match up with the actual technology it unlocks.

If you're a new player, though, that's bound to be confusing, and a little less immersing than what you're used to if you like to follow the universe in our games.

Can confirm. I'm a new player (well, not that new anymore) and I found the effort in writing the texts and their technologies extremely interesting, but unfortunately disconnected from the actual game implications.

Yes, the tech-tree needs some quality time by Mr. Spock. ;)


There are already differences in the tree regarding races. I wish to see more of such distinctive features which would tell the races more apart from each other.

YUP! I'm all about a rearrange! Can I also vote for carrying over something from EL? 


Can we have two tiers of Titanium and Hyperium weapon/defence tech? One as a Tier 2 Tech and the higher level one remaining where the current Titanium/Hyperium weapons/defences are now at Tier 3? It's bizarre how far the player has to go into the military tech tree to use a resource that they can unlock at Tier 1

The lore can use you a touching up but not so much to keep it in sync with ES1, more to make the blurbs impactful. Compare the tech descriptions of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and those of ES2.

Xenolinguistics being an industry tech is driving me crazy so heck yeah. This phenomenon annoyed me in ES1, too, such as Solar Mining.

I personally feel the tech tree as a whole functions perfectly, so while I vote yes, I would be perfectly fine with simply moving names and descriptions around. Perhaps it would be a good opportunity to add more faction-specific techs, or at least just give some names that change depending on the faction. I could see this potentially being a little confusing for new players, but as long as they are in the same position on the tree it shouldnt be much of a problem.

I don't see the value in this.  You should rather focus time on balancing/ improving gameplay. After 2 weeks everyone will go back to keep clicking technologies because of what they do and not because of some fancy flavour text. Returning players will get confused so im sure it will do more harm than good.
