First Ever Humankind Event: Día de los Muertos

We've got a surprise for you today: We're celebrating (though a bit late) the Día de los Muertos with Humankind's first ever in-game event, from now until November 30th!

The Día de los Muertos Events

These events will present you with various challenges to complete in your games, across multiple chapters unlocking over the course of the event. Not only will this give you new and perhaps unusual goals to pursue in your games, but you can even unlock unique customization options, ranging from symbols and frames to complete avatars! We want to host many such events in the future, but for the first one this November, we want to highlight the Dia de los Muertos, so the challenges in this first event are themed around religion, celebration, and mesoamerican cultures. For example, the first chapter includes the following challenges:

  • Festival: As Mexico, complete 20 Festival Public Ceremonies.
  • Distrito Federal: Have a city with at least 300 population.
  • World Faith: Be the religious leader of every Empire in a game.

You can check your progress on these challenges and redeem your rewards in game if you are connected to your Games2Gether account from the Community screen. This particular event will have two chapters, with the second unlocking in addition to the first on November 16th. For each chapter you complete, you will earn some empire emblem customization options. If you complete both chapters, that's three symbols and frames each, and the Catrina avatar on top of it!

So, a belated feliz día de los muertos to everybody, and we hope you will enjoy these challenges and rewards.

The Fabius Maximus Update

Alongside this event, we are also releasing the Fabius Maximus Update. We've talked about the contents of this Update before, but here's a quick summary of what it contains:

  • You can set opponents in the new game lobby to pick a random avatar from your collection
  • You can customize the colors used for empires and subtitles (e.g. diplomacy dialog or the narrator)
  • You can choose the abundance of strategic and luxury resources when creaing a new game
  • Several cultures have been rebalanced
  • Expansionist era stars are now easier to achieve in the early game on large maps
  • The expansionist ability is now free and can be used on enemies at war
  • Food gains and mammoth strength in the neolithic have been adjusted to slow down early growth
  • Population food consumption and district costs have been increase to slow down excessive growth
  • Several Civics have received new effects
  • Added varied unit art to improve immersion
  • And of course, lots of bugfixes

If you want to know more, you can find the complete patch notes in the release notes thread. Additionally, we are releasing a beta version of the modding tools, which you can learn about in the modding basics blog.

There are also some other improvements we've been working on, but that we could not finish for this patch. We're working on more granular customization of the end conditions, to let you decide exactly how your game may end, as well as unit balance, to better align the cost of units with their power. These improvements will arrive in the next patch around the middle of November.

We hope you'll have fun with the improvements of the Fabius Maximus update and the challenges of the Día de los Muertos event!

GamePass/Microsoft Store players please be aware: The update may release a few hours later on GamePass than on Steam. I unfortunately do not know the exact time the update will be available to you, but it should be tomorrow at the latest.

A quick note about the mod tools: We discovered a problem in the way they are set up on Steam. We're working to fix them, but they may not arrive until tomorrow. We're sorry for the further delay.

I wasn't aware that this was going to be half of a live service game?! Is it at least going to be a re-occuring event or aren't you gonna tell because you somehow had to add FOMO to a 4X game which people usually like to play at their own pace?

Also, with avatar selection being limited, I like seeing more but now I have to jump back into the game and won't even see the new one until I play a 3rd match. Would be nice if the avatar were available immediately for the duration of the event so we can actually play with the event flavor during the event instead of after. Then have it perma-unlock for those who finished the challenge or so.

Im skeptical about this event, on one hand its a good little extra content, but on the other, it hints at Humankind being part live service, which are frowned upon nowadays.

I'll be honest..."live service" games with limited-time special events really turn me off.

Not to mention that one-off events like this waste development time that could be otherwise spent on improving the core game.

Yup. It'll be a game in constant development. You don't have to do it. If more people complete the challenge they can say it's balanced and integrate the mechanic. Not sure why they've released mod support since that'll be broken constantly as each new version of this game launches every ... what has it been, four months? So I might as well go back to playing Path of Exile since the game will change again in a few months and I foresee a lot of mod instability.

Oh yeah! That's a good question. Ah y'all missed an opportunity for cheap cosmetic dlc's for people's favorite cultures. Zhou unit flair and costumes? 2 dollars please.

Shoot. And that Builder affinity everyone complains about, well, it's not so bad now is it, now when you have to complete 20 festivals!!

I see this as an incentive to play. Bonuses are small enough they don't make the biggest difference.

To those not familiar with Amplitude, they've been doing seasonal stuff for years now, mostly around Endless Day in January. That's a fun little recurring event. Might be the case for Humankind as well. Before long someone will have a cheat to change your date so you can get the goodies at your own leasure.

It's not even first time Amplitude adds something to their games you can unlock only through playing it during certain timeframe, it was fun in Endless series with Enldess Day, I won't mind it in Humankind, as long as you'll keep the number of such events relatively low and make it so that you can't miss on the rewards permanently (i.e. better have that event with those rewards back in a year).

Also, please give full version of that HK artwork in the background of the avatar, thank you.

For things like this, if they don't make a difference, then I tend to not really care and often don't participate.  If they DO make a difference and are limited-time, then I just get annoyed and find something else to play.  In either case, things like this are at best something I ignore but still have the negative side-effect of distracting the devs from developing the core game.  So it's not a good thing overall, IMO.

Endless Day is usually a single, fairly trivial task, and clock exploits are possible so I don't mind it that much.  However, since Humankind is tracking progress through your Games2Gether profile, I am not sure that clock exploits will be possible here.

As long as temporary live event content is free for all, then I don't see the problem. Keep premium stuff to DLC / Expansion packs.

This challenge doesn't even bring any modifiers, does it? That would be more fun. I think that's how challenges should be anyway: you select up to 1 of them at the game setup. It applies some modifiers and gives you some goals. Then you just need to achieve the challenge in that match. This way, the availability of the challenge could even be kept time-gated, as long as only picking the challenge (not finishing it) could be required to happen inside the event timeframe.

For this one, a production bonus for projects or double yields from it or so would've been nice. That way, they could've explored if changing these parameters can actually make them worthwhile to build. Right now, having cost in the thousands in the industrial era and even have that cost increase with every copy built is ridiculous for just 2 Influence every time.

Hopefully mod tools come soon so I can set its cost to 1 and give Mexico +1000% Food and Faith modifiers or so, lol.

What are these comments, sheesh. They aren't sell you hats nor lootboxes. If anything, live service approach means game will be patched more often.

Serious question now, how do I know if challenge started or triggered?

The challenge is automatically active when you are connected to G2G and start a new game.

The trigger notification is displayed in a small popup in the upper left corner.

Also, you must link G2G directly ingame. A linked Steam account isn't enough, even if it was enough to get avatars and such. Can be missed rather easily.

Yeah, but patched with what?  I've seen multiple games do things like this only for the development of the main game to get left behind in favor of perpetually working on events.  Even if I was OK with these types of events in a 4X game of all things, I would still feel like it's too early for Humankind's development process for resources to go toward things like this.

I like seasonal challenges like this, it’s a nice way to bring the player base back together in a time when the strategy game market is saturated with new content I also love what the art team did with the loading screen.
