Día de Los Muertos Part 2 and End Conditions Patch

As the keen-eyed among you may have already noticed, earlier this week Chapter 2 of the Día de los Muertos event unlocked, and the End Conditions Patch for the Fabius Maximus Update released. We're sure many of you have already delved into the challenges and changes, but for those who have not yet had time to look into the game, we've prepared a summary.

Día de los Muertos Chapter 2

On Tuesday we kicked off the second chapter of the Día de los Muertos event! If you complete all three challenges in this chapter, you will earn two more symbols and another border decoration, and if you have also completed Chapter 1, you will earn the Catrina avatar to use in game! Here are the challenges you can complete until the end of the month:

  • Necropolis: As the Maya or the Aztecs, sacrifice over 30 population to complete a construction.
  • Army of Darkness: As a Militarist Culture, use the Iron Reserves ability 4 times in the same Era.
  • Civil Evolution: Enact 50 Civics across multiple games.

End Condition Settings

With the patch released today, you can toggle individual end conditions and tailor your experience to your desire. Want to spend more time playing with the powerful bonuses from endgame technologies like Exosuit? Want to go to Mars without prematurely ending your game? Turn off that end condition. Looking for a particularly aggressive game that only ends once only one empire remains? No problem, just turn off everything except “All Empires Eliminated.” You can even turn off the turn limit and pollution threshold (though not its effects), so your game doesn’t have to end unless you want it to.

Military Balancing

This patch also includes a major balancing pass on military units. While most of these changes are focused on costs, upkeep, and resource requirements, there were some changes to Combat Strength or abilities as well. Overall, this should create a smoother progression across generic and emblematic units, and avoid some oddities in upgrade paths our players have been talking about. Here are some notable examples of changes:

  • Swordsmen (and Shotelai) no longer require iron, to allow all players to have some up to date units in the classical era
  • Roman Praetorian Guards now unlock with Standing Army and replace Swordsmen (you can still build Swordsmen if you have no iron)
  • Javelin Throwers and Noble Javelineers have had their Combat Strength and ability improved
  • Mortars now upgrade into Siege Artillery so you no longer lose indirect fire capability along the upgrade path
  • Howitzers gained some Combat Strength and upgrade into Helicopter Gunships for direct fire support
  • Cossacks are now stronger than Dragoons
  • Mongol Hordes have increased Combat Strength to fare better against the common Pikemen
  • Siege Elephants, Gajnal, and Varangian Guards lost a lot of Combat Strength to end their undisputed battlefield superiority
  • Cruise Missiles and SOMs now only costs a fraction of a Multirole-Fighter

You can find the full list of changes in the patch notes thread. We hope that these changes will lead to a clearer, more satisfying progression of warfare across the eras of the game.

A Little (Digital) Extra

We've heard a lot of praise for the Día de los Muertos variant of the Humankind art we used to promote this event, and quite a few requests for a wallpaper version. So, we've put together various formats of this art to use on different devices and profiles, which you will find on your rewards page starting next week.

Hope you'll have fun with the new challenges, end conditions, and unit balancing!

Not sure if it's possible but, since the patch notes are not translated into some languages, is it possible to include pictures of the mentioned units/districts when you hover over their name in the post? One might not know how something's translated in their language but it's more likely to remember its picture in the game.

This seems really good at the first look, but I think you overdid it with Varangian Guards, now for mere 2 Combat Strength bonus your army can no longer retreat. It was pretty unfair that they could easily stand their ground against Early Modern units, true, but I'd still like to see them around 39/40 CS, so that they at least dominate the medieval battlefield. Now they're pretty meh for a culture that already requires right circumstances to excel.

In the patch notes:

  • Expensive Districts balancing:
    • Base Districts now scale depending on how many Districts of that type are present
    • Other Districts scale based on a percentage of total District amount

What are "Base Districts" ? How exactly do they scale? Does it mean that Industry scales based on how many Industry types there are? Or does that mean that Industry scales base on how many "Base Districts" there are?

What are "Other Districts"?

What are Emblematic Districts considered?

Base Districts are the 4 basic economy Quarters: Farmers, Makers, Merchant, Research. Costs still scale much more wildly than pre-Fabius, but only by the number of that type of quarter, so building a farmer's quarter won't increase the cost of your next research quarter by 10,000 production, for example.

It can be different building, even in different cities. Just so you know :-)

I'm still not sure (was offline) if you can cancel all civics and enact,cancel,enact,cancel,... 50 times for cheap ;-)

I rly like how some of the units are geting balanced, how ever that does not fix the bigger point of the civ's being still being unbalanced. In multiplayer this means that who ever is ahead will get more ahead and go harrap-->achiemid-khmer-mugh-france and just win the game with out any one being able to stop this.

If u enable a mod in multiplayer that alowes players to pick the same civ as other players it can be very clearly seen than nearly everyone is picking the exactly same civ's becuase of how powerfull they are

My game has still not updated to the latest version. I'm still on V1.0.05.0549-S10(64 Bit Standalone build:180526) Why is my game not automatically updating when new patches are released?

Oh, and yes, I have ensured my login here is synched with Steam.....still nothing.

This needs to be improved. Updates to Civ were never this painful.

Necropolis: As the Maya or the Aztecs, sacrifice over 30 population to complete a construction.

Anyone else having trouble unlocking this one?  As the Aztecs, I started building a wonder with a 35 population buyout, clicked the buyout button, and finished the turn.  Necropolis didn't unlock though.

EDIT: Actually, nevermind.  I unlocked it.  Wonders don't count, but districts do.  And now saltytech's comment above makes sense to me.  You just have to sacrifice a total of more than 30, but not necessarily all at once.

Also, as was the case with Part 1, I ran into an issue where I unlocked everything, and then the game bumped my progress back so this was incomplete again.  So Necropolis went from completed to 15/30 and was stuck there.  In order to fix this, I actually had to exit the game, restart it, and then do my population buyout again.  It worked after that.  What's weird is that at the same time the game also triggered Infinite Turn Pending bug acress all of my saves, and that also wouldn't resolve until I restarted the game.

EDIT 2: Am I the only one who is NOT seeing the Catrina avatar preset in the avatar editor even though it says "Claimed" in the event window?

I have a issue, I am trying to enact a new Civil Evolution, but the task is still 42/50. It never had a chance, although I changed a lot to savedata. But I got the new portrait Catrina , when the chapter was not finished. Can someone help me?

So how come I am seeing nothing of the Día de los Muertos challenge anywhere in my game menu?

You may not be logged into your G2G account in game. The event only shows when you are logged in. It's happened to me when the event started, too.

We're going to look into improving this so it's clearer if you are logged in or not.

Tried logging out of G2G in Humankind and logging back in.  The game still shows that I completed all challenges and claimed Catrina, but she does not show up in my Avatar editor.  (I can see Victor and the other presets, but not Catrina.)  Any suggestions?
