Bolivar Update Beta Available now!

Working with our players to improve our games is an important part of our approach to game development, and with the Bolivar Update in early June being a big and much anticipated update (as you might be able to tell from the previews over the last three weeks), we want your help to put it through the paces before launch.

From May 19th to June 9th, an opt-in beta version of the Bolivar Update will be available through Steam (for PC only). This beta will let us collect feedback early to help us work on the first patch after the update. However, please remember that most changes based on your feedback will likely not make it into the release version of the Update, but will be delivered in a separate patch later.

Here’s what you can look forward to in the beta:

  • Reworked Surrender System: Forcing your opponent to surrender when they reach 0 War Support is now optional, but you will take stability penalties if you press on for too long

  • Rebalanced War Support Modifiers: Changes in War Support now scale with losses in battle, and cultural influence over territories causes war support losses

  • Surplus/Deficit Stability Tooltip: The stability tooltip in the city screen will now clearly display surplus or deficit stability

  • Infrastructure Yield Previews: Expected yields for Infrastructures are shown at the bottom of their tooltip before construction

  • Disabling Pollution Effects: Gameplay effects of pollution can be turned on or off in the New Game menu (defaults to off)

  • Administrative Center Renovation: You can update any administrative center to your current culture with a cheap construction project

  • Automatic Mod Reloading: The game automatically loads the mods used in your latest save when launching

  • Civics Unlock Conditions: Unlock conditions are shown in the tooltip of locked Civics

  • Unique Wonder Effects: All natural wonders now have a unique gameplay effect

  • Luxury Distribution Settings: In the map settings, you can now choose how even luxury resources should be spread

  • Scaling AI Difficulty: Bonuses the AI gets on higher difficulty now increase throughout the game to improve the late-game challenge. Please let us know how you feel about these changes on the forum and through the Bolivar Beta AI Survey

  • AI Delays: If your armies have queued orders for the turn, the AI will now wait for these to be resolved before engaging them

  • New Sortie Rules: Defenders cannot sortie on the first turn until the attacker chooses to “maintain siege”

  • Content Management: You can set the frequency of DLC content (except cultures) from the Content menu, and new content is highlighted in game

So, how do you access this beta if you want to try it? Open the properties of Humankind in your Steam library, go to the “betas” tab, and select the Bolivar_Beta branch. Steam should then update your game to the beta version (and if it doesn’t, a quick restart of Steam should resolve the issue).

Please keep in mind that saves for the Bolivar Update and the previous Vitruvian Update are not cross-compatible. Attempting to load a save with the wrong version of the game will likely crash your game.

If you want to share your feedback with us, please check out the Bolivar Beta forum. You can also find a Bug Reports section and a Known Issues thread there.

Have fun with the beta!

"Please keep in mind that saves for the Bolivar Update and the previous Vitruvian Update are not cross-compatible. Attempting to load a save with the wrong version of the game will likely crash your game. "

Will that also be the case when the update will be live (out of the beta branch)?

There should not be problems between the beta and the release version, and in theory even Vitruvian saves shuold be fine with the release version, but in that case weird edge cases could happen. So basically:

Should be safe:

  • Bolivar Beta to Bolivar

Might work, but could have unforeseen consequences:

  • Vitruvian to Bolivar Beta
  • Vitruvian to Bolivar Release Version

Absolutely not safe and will probably crash you game:

  • Bolivar Beta to Vitruvian
  • Bolivar Release to Vitruvian

Most excited over:
- AI Delays (I used to press move to trigger all queued moves right at turn start)
- Unique Wonder Effects (this should make them more interesting)
- Civics Unlock Conditions (no more checking my spreadsheet)
- New Sortie Rules (allows you to be the attacker, but unclear how this works in multiplayer...)
- Surplus/Deficit Stability Tooltip (no more weird +/- 40 stability math in my brain)
- Administrative Center Renovation (fancy!)

This needs context, does it make the early game easier? Or just the late game harder?
- Scaling AI Difficulty

Shouldn't punish you that much at the beginning.
"This should help them keep up with the player in later eras, while also making them a bit less likely to overpower you in the early game."

It's a good thing this is a beta, because I am playing it, and it's full of bugs.  Once I tried to build a cultural building, and it got stuck on "2 turns to build", which would never go away.  Another time, I was congratulated on circumnavigating the globe, when I had not even built one dock yet (let alone a ship; let alone met anyone else; or stepped one foot off my continent).

Why "Urban Planning Made Easy" not included?

We find out a last minute bug regarding that, so we are working on it, so I will  let you know if we can fix it on a quick update

If you find any bug, please report it on the bug report section we created for the beta.

It wasn´t working properly but we just release a quick update to solve that issue, so now it should be working ^^

From my experience with the update so far :

+Great AI improvement - defending on good tactical positions, and not running at me like a deer.
+Natural wonders bonuses work well and are worth fighting for
+War continuation works well, but it would be nice to know the details of the stability decrease penalties

- Attack priority is 50/50 - I've got sniped few times from enemy city upon attack, but worked well after reloading the save. Much better than it was but still a bit inconsistent.
- Calculated bonuses summary doesn't work. When I'm trying to construct a city upgrade it displays (0)(1) at the bottom instead. Doesn't change upon reload.

Just saw the note that the open-beta is from May 19th until the May 30th.
Does that mean when the beta is over, our games will be downgraded again to Vitruvian?

Or is that the moment the Bolivar just goes public? (Which would go contrary to the news stating around mid-June)

Asking as we wanted to start a new multiplayer game with the beta, but don't want to pause it in the time after the beta and its release.
Alternatively, is there a way to keep playing on the beta branch after the 30th (while Bolivar is not released)?
Especially important when keeping in mind the saves incompatibility from Bolivar -> Vitruvian.

Yes, some clarity please on what happens on June 1st?

Presumably games we start/play today may not work afterwards?

Over on Twitter they replied:

Yes, the Beta is no more from tomorrow but the update will be out soon:

Humankind on Twitter: "@ravi_mendis The beta branch will no longer be available at that time, but don't worry the full update will be out soon! Thanks for participating and giving us your feedback over on g2g ?" / Twitter
