As far as gameplay mechanics go it's probably possible, but it does go against the lore.

The Guardians are entities that are sleeping undiscovered on Forest-type planets, so the idea of just creating them (even at high cost) doesn't really work out from a lore point of view. Maybe you could talk to the guy who invented the faction (DevildogFF) to see what he thinks about it.

I'll put it like this: is this contest more of a community project where the best quests get bundled together to form the main questline of the Unfallen, or is the idea that each induvidual thinks of the main questline for the Unfallen on their own and that that will be implemented in the game?

I am terribly sorry if I overlooked something and am asking the obvious, but since there is only 1 entery allowed per user I don't want to mess things up. Thanks for answering in advance

Population quests are a quest type that can be triggered if you have a certain population in your Empire: say you have a bunch of Horatio, and they start rioting because they share a bathroom with the Haroshem, who put mud tracks everywhere, or they demand a temple dedicated to Horatio and their own TV channel to cater to their interests.

Basically, issues that stem from this population, so it can be anything from the mundane to the dramatic to give you a little insight into who they are.

I hope that's clearer! :)

I spoke to Devildog about my idea and he's said that he likes it. He should be posting in this thread soon to confirm this.

Check your messages, sir! Let's figure out something else, k?

Preferrably not, Heroes are way too desirable as a quest reward, and other population quests do not have that kind of reward.

No heroes. :)

Hey, can you get a hero as reward? The ones already in-game, but you didn't recruit yet. Also, is it ok if the submission go above 400 characters like about 13 or 15 characters more?

So you wanna hear more on population quests?

Remember, population quests allow the faction's player to learn more about their society by helping solve an issue affecting it. They have a theme, objectives to choose from, each with its own reward.

The quest's theme can be related to:

  • Population’s physiology/morphology
  • Population’s specialties
  • Population’s traditions
  • Population’s behavior among a multi-factional people
  • Population’s opinion about politics or a special ideology
  • Population’s opinion about war, science, diplomacy or economy
  • Population’s point of view about arts, food, etc
  • Population’s favorite environment
  • Population’s reproduction and inheritance
  • Etc

For example, population quests can be based on the idea that:

  • Horatio wants to live alone, far from ugly creatures
  • Sophons can stay calm without intellectual and physical stimuli
  • Cravers’ population has lost its bishop, so you have to hatch one

The objective of the quest can be a variation of pretty much any objective type that is already in the game, tailored to Unfallen society! However, there are certain constraints you should keep in mind:

  • Choices that are dependent on your relationship with another empire (eg: sign peace or be in an alliance) can be very dependent on your game settings, and should be avoided as main choices (they're fine as conditional choices)
  • Likewise, choices that are dependent on galaxy generation (eg: entwining vines around Auriga) can make it difficult for your quest to be triggered, so keeping them conditional options at best is better

The format of a quest should follow this example template:

Two choices are always present and should be offered so that the player can try to fix a situation, by example by winning battles, or building improvements of a certain type. You have the option of adding a conditional choice, which will only be offered if the conditions are met. These conditions can be:

  • FIDSI / Happiness production
  • Empire’s diplomatic relation
  • Another specific faction in the Empire
  • A particular political situation (Government type, Senators…)
  • Planets types in the Empire
  • A Specific Technology unlocked
  • A Specific building (wonder for example) built in an Empire.

/!\ Quantity of Battles and Diplomatic Agreements can’t be used as prerequisites.

When it comes to rewards, you don't need to be defining a precise reward as much as just defining your intention with a reward type (we'll do the fine-tuning to make sure it's balanced!). Reward types can be:

  • StarSystemImprovement
    • Can’t modify the planet population slots (GUI constrains)
    • Can modify FIDIS, manpower, strategic or luxury production, happiness
    • Can modify manpower production or local manpower stock
    • Can modify local Ground Battle stat
    • Vision range
    • Can have strong or additional constraints: +2 Science per Pop +2 Science per Unfallen +4 Science is overpopulation
  • EmpireImprovement
    • Can’t add a new feature (sorry :D)
    • Can’t improve an Affinity
    • Can modify Command points
    • Can modify FIDSI production, happiness status
    • Can modify Overpopulation/Over colonization
    • Can modify Diplomacy costs
    • Can modify Ground or Space Battle stats
    • Can increase probes stock/production/etc or moves
  • Module
    • New version of a Weapon Type (Super Unfallen Missile)
    • New version of a Hull/Shield Type
    • New version of a Fighter or Bomber Type
    • New version of a Support Type

Make sure to avoid the following rewards:

  • New Population (except if your objective is about having free population slots)
  • Battle Tactics
  • Heroes

THE RULES:

  • Only one submission per user
  • Each category will have its own entry in our Contests section.
  • Submissions cannot be upvoted until November 15th, at which point we'll unlock upvoting. You will then have two weeks to upvote your favorite submissions, the most popular of which will go into a final vote
  • The quest must focus on a particular aspect of Unfallen society

SOME TIPS:

  • Be creative. Besides what's known of them in their faction quest, little is known of the Unfallen society, so this is your chance to imagine what life is like for them!
  • Puns and jokes are welcome. Reference to literature or pop culture, sci-fi or otherwise, while not mandatory, are always a big hit. BUT...
  • The quest must not be identical to another game's (even if it's really good). No copyrighted material either.
  • The quest must be achievable (duh).

TEMPLATE TO FOLLOW:

  • Name of the quest: 50 characters max (must also be the name of your thread)
  • Description: 400 characters max
  • Two objectives to accomplish, with an optional conditional third objective
  • A reward for each objective
  • The outcome for each objective. You can either write it out (400 characters max) or simply outline it

That's it.

If you have any questions on how to create quests or what's allowed, or really, anything else, just ask here!

I don't know how much freedom we have in that regard, since none of us necessarily know any background details we might be contradicting unless you guys explicitly detail them.

So after checking with Slowhands, the fire that renews and fire that destroys is mentioned fairly often in the faction quest, so yes, it's something we do have. Nonetheless, if you want to expand on this or just flat-out invent things, go right ahead, and it'll be on us to reconcile both stories! :)

Flat-out invent things, you say...how about an improvement that takes a lot of food (at least 1K) and sacrifices Unfallen population to make a Guardian. Could that be added in?

Yes to #1, but right now 3D visuals can't appear during gameplay. We might overcome this by the time the quest is included, but consider that it might not happen either... Gameplay-only anomalies are 100% fine though.

That's 400 characters, and that limit applies to the initial description, not the choices or result.

The outcome, aka the conclusion of the quest once you have fulfilled the objective (which I omitted to mention but have added since) can be up to 400 characters too, or you can just outline it and let us come up with it!

Is 400 words description include finishing the quest and each-choices flavor text?

The conditional choice could be depending on gameplay affinity (except, of course, Shipbound because this means no other populations can be in the empire). Visual affinity is a bit trickier but we can probably pull it off too.

As for the production cost, we can reduce production cost in industry and dust.

Just in case this isn't clear for everyone: population quests occur when you have a certain population in your empire, it doesn't have to be your major population. Therefore, you could trigger an Unfallen population quest without necessarily playing the Unfallen faction!
