CREATING THE SPY FACTION, PART 3: SPECIES MORPHOLOGY

Reply

Time to move ahead with our vote on the future espionage faction. The results for its type are in, and by a significant margin, you have voted that they should be an ancient alien faction!

This means that they will be a non-humanoid species that is as old or older than the Endless, and that's another brick we're laying in building this new faction, together. Now, we're moving on to the next step, the faction's morphology.

Parasite: an organic life form that survives by infecting others.

Arachnid: a multi-limbed life form.

Wraith: an incorporeal life form.

We have decided not to add a silhouette to each voting option, as we think they influence the votes a bit too heavily. Use your imagination!

Ghost like creature, possibly a members of species from completely alien environment (Crystal planet? Very old and abandoned tomb world? Or even a species living on the stars themselves! That would be...  would be... a really nice, fewsh touch for our new race!

Something noble and wise, using all means to achieve their goals! Just a shadows watching younger races pass by, suddenly forced by some unexpected event to take an action and once again step into galactic forum!

Hard to choose here for me... But arachnid, nope. We have somes heroes who are "near" arachnid forms. And not sure it's good.

I'm in love with parasite and wraith... It will be wraith for me

I think incorporeal forms make the most sense for surviving the endless and make for a fun amd unique playstyle, wraiths sound good. Parasite would be cool but feel they would be a bit too similar to the cravers in terms of leaching on others.

Parasites light my imagination up. I know some people were speculating on something like the Goa'uld or Genestealer cults, but the idea of an alien spy faction has been making me think of the Yeerks for weeks now. For those who haven't read the Animorph YA fiction series, the Yeerks were a race of slugs that slithered through your ear and took direct control of your brain. They kept the hosts acting as normal as usual while they infilitrated entire planets. There's a lot of potential for a parasitic species of Body Snatchers and I want to see what Amplitude's writers can do with the idea.

All three for me! No? what a great combination that would make :( Ancient Alien, parasitic ghost spiders... that would ruin an empires day

Parasite it is then, for the sake that "wraith" was somewhat taken by the Forgotten in Endless Legend (by extension, parasite= necrophage?)

Parasitic espionage has fun implications= infest a free planet/system, leave it alone. Another Empire comes in to control it, infecting the populace or governing hero of a planet without having to be there, or at least have little presence.

Make them ghost spiders, just for fun :)

I voted wraith cuz i never saw A Ghost - kind of Major Faction before. Also i believe parasites, even cool, would be even scarier than Wraiths themselfs. and because of that, i prefer wraiths who are scary but not so scary after all xD i think cravers are already considered some sort of Planterary Parasities (or Galactical Parasites) in some way... aren't they simply a Pleague?

Yea auriga, but i think all choices are very scary. and thats what matters! :D

even by the fact we have some major races looking like spiders (cravers in this case) i think all choices are very cool to implement. they seem a lot of cool!

As cool as parasite would be, I'm assuming that as parasites they'd have some sort of 'leech' mechanic, which is too similar to the Vodyani's Essence Leech and the Cravers 'parasitcal bug', 'consumes-everything' mechanics/gameplay styles; also reminds me too much of the Flood and/or other popular sci-fi/fantasy parasitical species.

Arachnid just doesn't seem to fit the theme of an Ancient Alien Race that either predates the Endless civilization or was able to survive the time of the Endless to "today".

So my vote goes towards wraiths.

This is because it makes sense for an incorporeal life form to be able to predate or surivive since the Endless civilization, it could easily explore the Virtual Dust or Soul mechanics and expand that part of the lore OR have it's own form of 'Virtualness' which would be an interesting and new mechanic in how the population reproduces. Also I love the look of the incororeal and virtual forms that Amplitude has created and it would be amazing to see what else they could do.

And who wouldn't want a faction that can phase through matter (it'd also work great with possible newer modules like possible cloaking devices, phase-matter shifters, etc) and then a spy-quest since as an Ancient civilization, they would have watched and possibly been heavily involved in galatic politics and other fledgling civilizations. Also it'd be interesting to see how a wraith civilization functions and then relates to the Lost.

Lastly, most of the time we see 'Wraiths' in pop-culture, science fiction, and fantasy, unlike parasites, they seldom hold what one could consider a "major faction" role, neither being the central antagonist, nor being their own civilization (often they're the 'leftovers' of previous civilizations) so I'd love to see Amplitude flesh out a wraith civ.

Why do I feel like this race is going to look like the Haunts from Endless Legend if they made an empire?

Because I'm so down for that.

I am going to reiterate my idea for this faction: shapeshifters, with organic ships that can change shape to mimic any other faction. Ghostly forms would be great for changing shape, or maybe even just cloaking and becoming invisible. Thus why I voted Wraith.

Parasite for me, I like the idea of infesting another empires population and taking over not only their bodies but also their memories and that would work well in line for a spy faction trying to get information and knowledge.

And when all is done they could detonate the host like a bio-bomb killing off that pop and maybe an improvement, basically a terrorist attack

From a story perspective, I can already picture a melancholic tale of the race slowly forgetting their real identity since they spent so much time infesting other races, pretending to be someone else to survive from the Endless and along the way they started to believe they belonged to those other race.

I voted for parasite, but I wouldn't mind wraith either.

For parasite, it would be cool if it is more of a cyber-virus race rather than a biological parasite perse, but in any case the faction will surely be unique and not overlapping with existing factions.

While a race of ancient spirits sounds amazing, I'll have to throw my weight in with team parasite, since the potential is just too juicy to ignore.

Imagine, instead of colonising your own planets, you 'invade' other faction's colonies and outposts (but not neccessarily with any combat). It could definitely lead to some innovative gameplay, or maybe before ground combat you can send in some parasitic spores/scouts/larvae that help to weaken the planet's defenses with each turn, effectively giving a boost when sieging. In terms of technology, I'm thinking of a reverse-Sophons mechanic, where they instead get a science boost if other factions have already researched it.

I think parasite and wraith are most plausible.  I can't see a giant spider infiltrating our society.  Voted parasite, although I wonder how the hero art, etc. might be implemented.  Wraith would be pretty cool as well, and fits with some Endless Legend lore.
