New Minor Faction: Origin

Reply

The vote on the role the new minor faction fills for their sovereign ended a few days ago, with the Oracles emerging as the winner. They probably saw it coming.

Oracle

The people of this faction are so finely attuned to the powers of Dust that their ability to understand and predict seemingly random events is revered as supernatural by some.

Now that their place in the world has been settled, we need to discuss their origin. What is the source of their almost oracular powers of prediction? We’ve come up with three options for you to choose from:

Dust-Fueled Implants

Dust-powered augmentations allow members of this faction to process staggering amounts of information and simulate future events.

Ritual Use

Using small amounts of Dust in various religious and cultural ceremonies, every member of this society is suffused with trace amounts of Dust.

Hunters of the Lost

This faction was engineered by the Endless to sense concentrations and shifts of Dust to track down the remaining Lost.

Which of these sources of power sounds most appealing to you?

My Vote: Hunter of the Lost Artifact

Because of the Meme Potential and maybe some new Lore regarding the Lost

Did choose Hunters of the Lost. Obviously Dust-Fueled Implants is 2nd, yet.

I like the idea of rituals but it would remind me too much of the Ardent Mages.  I chose hunters for the sake of creating an interesting and maybe strained relationship with the main faction

Hunters of the lost. A great potential for new role.

Also arises questions to be asked.

Dust fuelled implants is very, very odd to me. Because at this point in time there's two kinds of Dust, Endless Dust and Lost Dust and they virtually serve the same purpose but one is nanites. So if dust is being utilized in the implants...what are a bunch of nanites doing then to help with predicting? That would mean interaction with parts of the brain, and I just don't entirely see it because for the most part when you combine dust and the brain you get Heroes.

The logic escapes me there, Hunters of the Lost however is very fascinating, I can always go for another robot minor faction, or bio engineered faction, and the formula works better than implants. Not trying to write the game for the devs just saying what makes sense to me the most.

Dust-Fuelled implants sounds interesting, I like the lack of mysticism / references to the past in this origin. In a galaxy where the Endless left that much legacy, and where technological advancement is paramount, it would be fresh to see a race that either augmented itself to keep up the pace, or was purposed for advanced computation by someone other than the Endless.

If we're going to have a faction that can see into the future in a handwavy fantasy sorta way, then I think it makes the most sense to have their origin be from the *other* source of magic in this series: the Endless and the Lost. It makes sense that this faction has some strange occular abilites after being designed by one set of "so advanced they might as well be Gods" race to find remants of the other race of God-like creatures that exist in this universe. Dust implants don't make a lot of sense from a lore presepective, and ritual use is a bit too vanilla fantasy for a sci-fi series with this much creativity and originality.

Voting for Dust-Fueled Implants, because it conjures up the idea of Mentats (from the Dune stories) for me, which is awesome. Also this seems like a really good background, as well as reasoning for the minor faction to maintain their identity despite being part of a very old empire for a very long time.

Still, it appears that Hunters of the Lost will win, which is another interesting origin, and one that fits quite well into the Endless lore. I wonder: is the major faction Amp is working on related to the Endless in some way? Perhaps they are inheritors to part of the Endless legacy? Looking forwards to more info about all of this.

Edit: for practically all of these community votes I have been drawn to multiple options, but of course could only vote for one of them, which is disappointing. This is probably not unique to me. What would people think about being able to vote for their first and second favorites, rather than just for one option? So that, for at least some of these votes, we could get a "consolation prize" sort of thing and have the runner-up get some representation in the game?

For example: the minor faction population quest themes relate to the second most popular option chosen during the "origin" vote.

Hunters for coolness and extra lore.  Furthermore it adds to the idea that this empire, along with its minor faction, is old and in the right place to fill the void left after the Endless Civil War.

I was torn between Hunters and Implants.  Finally decided to go with Hunters.  I think it has more potential for uncovering deeper secrets of the Endless Universe.

Voted Hunters. Would have been nice to pair it with Special Forces, but it goes well with Oracles, too.

Hunters of the Lost sounds exciting, and fits as other races are already known to have been tailor made as tools by the Endless.

Since their lore up to now says they can predict random events, I go with the rituals. The other choices look like precise tools made by them or the Lost. In my head, they created their Empire because of the random events they foresaw and because the people saw a godly power in them. Then their Empire was gone because foreseeing random events won't save you forever. Not to mention that we could have some kind of losing faith in the rituals and their "religion". Just me making stories in my head...
