Endless Space 2 Turns Three

Hey everybody,

On this day back in 2017, we released Endless Space 2 from Early Access. In the time before and since release, the game has changed and evolved thanks to your feedback, and now three years, four major expansions, and several minor DLCs later, the possibilities feel nearly Endless. With all the different factions, quests, events, and ways to play the game, so many stories can emerge from this game.

Personally, I will never forget the passive-aggressive Cravers Rogan and I encountered during our attempt to lead the Hissho empire to the Way of the Obsidian Eagle rather than the Red Blade. We just wanted to see if peace was ever an option for our feisty feathered friends, yet were met with aggression at every turn. Out of all the empires we met, the Cravers were the last we expected to back down and leave us alone. Of course, in the end the constant threats and attacks from other empires pushed us to extreme measures after all...

That is not to say the game is perfect. We know there are flaws, and we have seen your reports and feedback about bugs and balance. We are working together with Clumsy Dwarves, a studio founded by former NGD staff, to address many of these issues. The first patch is expected to release in the second half of June.

But on the occasion of ES2’s birthday, we’d like to hear from you in the comments:

Tell us about a crazy story you experienced in the game.

Tell us what you love about Endless Space 2, what makes it special to you.

Tell us about your favorite factions and characters.

Tell us about that time Horatio rejected you because you were not perfect enough. We’ve all been there.

I'm sceptical about this part. Aren't they the guys that made ES2 into mess it is now?

I don't have any specific memories from Endless space 2...
I just remember having a great time with an extremely wellmade and detailed game, visually beautiful and with an amazing developer studio behind it.
The mere fact that two factions in this game is helped and designed by the community just warms my young heart :)

I hope for more in the future, as I enjoy the game to its fullest.

It's really only a mess for multiplayers right now isn't it? There really isn't anything game breaking in a normal single player game.

Horatio didn't reject me, he said he wanted more just like me for a project he was working on! I sure hope it's a great as he says, he seemed convinced it would make everyone a better person :)

I've always been a fan of the sophons, but I've felt as if they're a really shallow faction. I love them thematically, their sense of humor, etc., and you can't deny their ships are amazing, but their gameplay affinity and story are just really shallow!

I hope NGD take it seriously that time, like they did with Endless Legend. I hope they study the subject before altering it and take steps much more carefuly, because working in the universe on a universal scale leaves much less room for mistakes than working in the universe on a one planet scale. I think awakening went so poorly because they didn't feel much responsibility, while they should have. I am really happy to hear all this though. With all their flaws, Endless games are one of my favourites.

Have you seen the bugfix mod? Horatio Perfectionist trait is broken, it only makes ships 20% more expensive and doesnt give 10% dmg boost. Umbral Choir population boni dont work properly, some of the other faction specific unlockable laws dont work properly. Does it make the game unplayable in SP? I guess not, but would i rather have my Factions work properly and not have to fix it with a mod bethesda style? YES.

Edit: Pls take a look a the bugfix mod and fix those bugs natively.

What I love most about the game is telling the Cravers NO when they demand dust..

I wonder if they'll use the bugfix mod at all, I've contributed a lot to that so it'd be cool if some of my fixes made it into the game :)

Definitely! I've had problems with needing to frequently restart matches and constant desync, to the point that trying to do anything is impossible due to desync

My first successful game (as in managed to get them rolling, was learning how to play them on the go) as Vodyani, after eliminating... undesirables from my corner of galaxy I didn't venture out of it to find new prey. There was an alliance of two factions (Horatio and Riftborn, I think) rocking the rest of the galaxy and eating people one by one. I was gearing up for some sweet final confrontation against them, but instead was greeted with 'You lose' screen, because my math failed me and I let them take the last world they needed for conquest victory.

I like the Empire building and little stories you get along the way. Adding some background to what my heroes do, sniping ones that match the minorities in my faction so that they can lead their people to greatness, finding a star suitable for Space Australia where I send all the Cravers to slowly die of starvation while they crank out dust and science.

Favourite faction would be United Empire, because that was my first win in the game and I like the general feeling of the faction. Lumeris are close second, because they were my first experience with game some months before buying it during free weekend and not at all because of miss Meos assets.

As for characters it has to be Justicar Jyde Parcha, partly because Sisters of Mercy is among my favourite minors, partly due to her non-dust origins. As far as Academy goes, she won it on Endless difficulty.

Horatio did not reject me and I have a badge to prove it ;P

YES! Upvote this. The work has been done by you fantastic modders, I wish Amplitude could just make them native and give you credit. If there's no legal stuff barring it, of course. In my mind, this is in the spirit of making games together, something I haven't seen much of lately. I said it a couple of times before, ES2 didn't receive the amount of love it should have as EL did. I'll never forget the first time I played the Early Access ES2. The amazement. I loved every second of it. The beautiful graphics, art, the music. I've never been blown away by a strategy game like this before. I can only compare it to my first experience with The Witcher 3. That's how much I loved ES2. I thought of all the content it would receive, based on what I saw happened to EL. But then I guess the focus was shifted towards Humankind at some point so here we are.

My only wish for this game is to be as solid a title as EL has become over the years.

This news that there's a group of people now working on fixes is great, I hope that it comes with the commitment to see things through and really make this work. I've spent a lot of money and time on this game, I think I'm not alone with that, and I firmly believe that this is the minimum that the player base deserves.

(If there's one thing I would love it's the detailed Empire screen like in EL with the graphs and everything. ES2's version is very shallow in that department. I'd have expected that in the space age, information like that would be more readily available than in the quasi-medieval setting of EL so I expected something like that. What we got is disappointing.)

Please do not point fingers at anybody. Many factors contributed to this situation, and I don't think it can be traced back to any one person or small group of people. You are free to discuss problems with the game, but please blame anybody for them.

That said, yes, we are very much aware of the fixes included in the bugfix mod. However, I don't know if there may be any legal issues barring their inclusion, and in any case it is a longer process than merely copying and pasting their work, as the changes will require proper QA.
